As can be seen in the picture, the rebuilding effort in Japan has already began and the results are sometimes astonishingly quick.

The picture to the left is dated 11/03/2011 at 430pm, roughly an hour after the earthquake hit. The picture on the right was taken on 15/03/2011 at 1pm in the afternoon. What a remarkable difference!

I will update with further pictures of the rebuilding effort in Japan once I have them.

Ever wondered about the link between nuclear energy and the pointy swords that samurai wield? No? Then this is a good time to think about it. The clue is in the picture!

<a href="http://jalopnik.com/#!5782082/the-strange-link-between-samurai-swords-and-japans-nuclear-reactors", target="_blank">Justin Hyde from Jalopnik with the answers –

Japan Steel Works is the world’s only volume builder of nuclear reactor vessels, the steel container that holds radioactive fuel, and in case of a meltdown, prevents that fuel from leaking and triggering a catastrophe. Founded in 1907 and rebuilt following World War II, it supplied nearly all of the vessels used in Japan’s 54 nuclear power plants, including the containers at the Fukushima Daiichi plants designed by General Electric and Toshiba.

…

Although Japan Steel Works is a major corporation with 5,000 employees, it also maintains a samurai sword blacksmith, in a small shack on a hill above the factory in Muroran, where a single craftsman still hammers steel into broadswords, as the company has done since 1917.

NOW, you know the link! I myself didn’t know it until I have read the article. Amazing how this large modern industrial corporation is still sticking to the traditional method of forging a katana!

It seems that there is a lot of confusion about radiation exposure calculations right now. In fact, I am even confused myself when I see all the numbers floating around with no clear indication of what is good or bad. So here’s a quick guide to the numbers. To put it succinctly, the current report about the exposure level in the reactors is at 12 mSv/hr, (EDIT: this was the report around 1200 Tokyo Time GMT +9), which was just a sudden momental spike in the reading. The figure has since dropped to 0.5 mSv/hr as of 1630 (GMT +9)

Since the numbers are all quoted in mSv, I am going to use mSv in all calcuations below. 1 Sv = 1000 mSv. It is not meant to be a conclusive guide and I will of course, update when I get more accurate information. Meanwhile, this will serve as a rough guide to what we are facing.

Some background information:

Natural Background	3.1 mSv/year
Domestic Pilots	2.2 mSv/year
Average US Exposure	6.2 mSv/year
7 Hour Airline Flight	0.02 mSv
Chest x-ray (2 views)	0.10 mSv
Chest CT	7.0 mSv

Radiation sickness is generally associated with acute (a single large) exposure. Nausea and vomiting are usually the main symptoms. The amount of time between exposure to radiation and the onset of the initial symptoms may be an indicator of how much radiation was absorbed, as symptoms appear sooner with higher doses of exposure. The symptoms of radiation sickness become more serious (and the chance of survival decreases) as the dosage of radiation increases. A few symptom-free days may pass between the appearance of the initial symptoms and the onset of symptoms of more severe illness associated with higher doses of radiation.

An average low dosage that will start to lead to radiation poisoning is at about 1’000-2’000 mSv. Nausea and vomiting generally occur within 24–48 hours after exposure to this mild dose due to radiation damage to the intestinal tract lining. The radiation will begin to destroy the cells in the body that divide rapidly. Headache, fatigue, and weakness are also seen with mild exposure.

Moderate radiation poisoning is at around 2’000-3’500 mSv. At these levels, nausea and vomiting beginning within 12–24 hours after exposure. In addition to the symptoms of mild exposure, fever, hair loss, infections, bloody vomit and stools, and poor wound healing are seen with moderate exposure.

Severe radiation poisoning occurs at 3’500-5’000 mSv and very severe radiation poisoning occurs at above that level. In the latter case, nausea and vomiting occurs in less than 1 hour, followed by diarrhea and high fever. In the former case, the time to nausea and vomiting is below 30 minutes followed by by the appearance of dizziness, disorientation, and low blood pressure. Both cases are of course, followed by all the other symptoms typical of lower levels of exposure. Severe exposure is fatal about 50% of the time.

What does it all means?

The simplest way to think about it as a threat is to imagine the distance between you and the reactors. Via the inverse-square law, basically an object twice as far will receive a quarter of the energy. This means that let’s say at 1 metre away from the reactors its 400 mSv/hr, even at 10m away, its only 4 mSv/hr, scarcely more than the average dose a person receive in a year. Of course, this is what you will receive in an HOUR so you got to bear this in mind as well. I am not saying its safe, just that its not as dangerous/bad as what you think unless you would have to be in there for 24 hours in which case I have to say “Good Luck” to you.

I believe the annual industrial worker limit of radiation exposure/year is at 50 mSv. Upon reaching this figure, the worker would be pulled out from the radiation zone and can only return after a year of normal, non-industrial exposure. As for emergency rescue teams etc, the hazmat suits they wear DO NOT protect them from radiation exposure, which can only be shielded by thick materials such as lead. The suits are only used to prevent them from accidentally acquiring radiation particles/fallout in the course of their work. Their threshold of exposure/year is at 100 mSv which reflects on the higher level of risk they might be exposed to.

Last bit of information:

Whole body vs. part of body exposure
In the case of a person who has had only part of their body irradiated then the treatment is easier, as the human body can tolerate very large exposures to the non-vital parts such as hands and feet, without having a global effect on the entire body. For instance, if the hands get a 100 Gy (100’000 mSv) dose which results in the body receiving a dose (averaged over the entire body) of less than 1 Gy (1’000 mSv) then the hands may be lost but radiation poisoning may not occur. The resulting injury would be described as localized radiation burn.

One of the primary dangers of whole-body exposure is immunodeficiency caused by the destruction of bone marrow and consequent shortage of white blood cells. It is treated by maintaining a sterile environment, bone marrow transplants (see hematopoietic stem cell transplantation), and blood transfusions.

At this point in time, I’m inclined to post this from the excellent XKCD comic.

Numbers/facts quoted are from Xrayrisk and Wikipedia.

Satellite photograph from DigitalGlobe

CORRECTION: The readings above (12 mSv/hr) are the readings at the gate of the reactor building, NOT at civilian areas like Tokyo. In metropolitan areas like these, the readings would be far lower. In fact, the readings for these areas are about the same as normal usual background readings, meaning there is ABSOLUTELY nothing to worry about right now.

———————————————————————
EDIT: Excellent letter from a German nuclear scientist at MIT describing the entire situation in depth and about why is there nothing to be worried about. The article is a little long but its DEFINITELY worth a read! This guy should be given a regular column!

EDIT 2: The highest radiation reading recorded in Tokyo today was 0.9 μSv/hr around 1200 (GMT +9), when a plume of radioactive wind was blown towards it. The reading is NOT in milliSievert/hour (mSv/hr) but in microSievert/hour (μSv/hr) as pointed out kindly by Duren in the comments. 0.9 μSv/hr = 0.0009 mSv/hr which means you shouldn’t even be worried at all.

The readings for Tokyo after that are about the same as normal usual background readings, meaning there is ABSOLUTELY nothing to worry about right now. As far as I am aware of, the wind direction is currently out towards the Pacific Ocean.

EDIT 3: I have updated a link to the pdf of the official reading released by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) in the first paragraph. The highest level reached so far, was and still is the 12 mSv/hr around 0900 (GMT +9).

EDIT 4: Apparently, there was a one-off reading of 400 mSv/hr happening around 1415 (GMT +9) at the Fukushima nuclear plant. So far after combing through numerous news reports, the main source for this seems to be the International Atomic Energy Agency website.

Dose rates of up to 400 millisievert per hour have been reported at the site.

They followed up with a clarification about an hour ago around 2025 (GMT +9) with some words of caution about the figure.

As reported earlier, a 400 millisieverts (mSv) per hour radiation dose observed at Fukushima Daiichi occurred between units 3 and 4. This is a high dose-level value, but it is a local value at a single location and at a certain point in time.

I would like to stress that like what they mentioned, it was a one-off reading which although high, might not be truly representative of the radiation being emitted. For instance, a 400 mSv/hour reading, if only occuring for 5 minutes, would only give off an effective radiation of (400/12) = 33 mSv. Remember, radiation poisoning usually only occur in a single large blast of at least 1000 mSv as I have highlighted above so while the reading is dangerous, it is by no means critical or even fatal if its a short-term/temporary reading in an isolated incident. Once you have factor in the distance like in my example above, the figure is not as high as it once seems.

As usual, please feel free to comment below if there are any discrepancies noticed in the post.

Twitter has proved invaluable not only in aiding communication efforts in disaster-hit Japan, but also in documenting such stories of human courage and compassion. Unforeseen benefits of social media maybe, but it is proving once again that technology can be a great tool to fuel human expression.

These are days when I feel the human race is not as cruel as commonly perceived and there is certainly hope in the world as a species. These are days when I feel grateful to be sharing the planet with such people and can only hope that one day, I can emulate the wonderful examples being set. And finally, these are days when I feel that all is not lost and when people all pull together, the combined work and effort can indeed move a mountain. A quirk of the culture/country maybe, but today I am more inclined to see it as a beacon of hope for mankind.

Nothing more can be said in the light of such great human kindness.

Japanese people have been very open on Twitter about their experiences following the quake. These snippets of what moved them and touched them during these very trying times are heart-warming. I have attempted a rough translation on some of them so that you can have a read.

Please continue to pray for the people in Japan.

I hope these mini-stories will bring strength and encouragement to my friends and family in Japan by letting them know that, not only does the world sympathize with them, it looks up to them in admiration! My thoughts are with you.

http://twitter.com/unosuke/status/46376846505426944

At Tokyo Disneyland:
Tokyo Disneyland was handing out its shops’ food and drinks for free to the stranded people nearby. I saw a bunch of snobby looking highschool girls walking away with large portions of it and initially though “What the …” But I later I found out they were taking them to the families with little children at emergency evacuation areas. Very perceptive of them, and a very kind thing to do indeed.

http://twitter.com/akitosk/status/46302222346223616

Message from the UN
Secretary General Ban Ki Moon: “Japan is one of (the UN’s) most generous and strongest benefactors, coming to the assistance of those in need the world over. In that spirit, the United Nations stands by the people of Japan and we will do anything and everything we can at this very difficult time.” I was moved at his words. What better example that good things happen to those who do good.

http://twitter.com/micakom/status/46264887281848320

At a congested downtown intersection …
Cars were moving at the rate of maybe one every green light, but everyone was letting each other go first with a warm look and a smile. At a complicated intersection, the traffic was at a complete standstill for 5 minutes, but I listened for 10 minutes and didn’t hear a single beep or honk except for an occasional one thanking someone for giving way. It was a terrifying day, but scenes like this warmed me and made me love my country even more.

http://twitter.com/gj_neko26/statuses/46394706481004544

During the earthquake
We’ve all been trained to immediately open the doors and establish an escape route when there is an earthquake. In the middle of the quake while the building was shaking crazily and things falling everywhere, a man made his way to the entrance and held it open. Honestly, the chandelier could have crashed down any minute … that was a brave man!

http://twitter.com/yunico_jp/status/46168394755612672

Bus stop mini episode:
It was freezing and bus was taking ages to arrive. “@saiso” left the queue to run to a nearby pharmacy. He bought heating pads and gave one to everyone in the queue!

http://twitter.com/kfstudio/status/46390032776437760

Thank you Tokyo Disney Sea
My daughter who was staying at DisneySea just made it back home! Many, many thanks to the staff who worked very hard in the cold with ready smiles that made her to feel safe and secure during the entire night. They brought her food, drinks, snacks, heating pads, and anything necessary to ensure she was comfortable and secure throughout her stay. I was touched by the Disney staff’s warmth and hospitality. Thank you so much!

http://twitter.com/VietL/status/46376383592677376

Reminded of the goodness of the Japanese people
This earthquake has reminded me of that Japanese goodness that had recently become harder and harder to see. Today I see no crime or looting: I am reminded once again of the good Japanese spirit of helping one another, of propriety, and of gentleness. I had recently begun to regard my modern countrymen as cold people … but this earthquake has revived and given back to all of us the spirit of “kizuna” (bond, trust, sharing, the human connection). I am very touched. I am brought to tears.

http://twitter.com/aquarius_rabbit/status/46213254376210432

Card board boxes, Thank you!
It was cold and I was getting very weary waiting forever for the train to come. Some homeless people saw me, gave me some of their own cardboard boxes and saying “you’ll be warmer if you sit on these!” I have always walked by homeless people pretending I didn’t see them, and yet here they were offering me warmth. Such warm people.

http://twitter.com/kiritansu/status/46335057689980928

What foreigners are saying about Japanese people
At a supermarket where everything was scattered everywhere over the floors, shoppers were helping pick them up and putting them back neatly on the shelves before quietly moving into line to wait to pay for them. On the totally jam-packed first train after the quake, an elderly man gave up his seat for a pregnant woman. Foreigners have told me they are amazed witnessing sights like these. I do believe they actually saw what they said they saw. Japan is truly amazing.

http://twitter.com/V10CENTAURO/statuses/46388641001508864

Information network this time around
The information sharing efforts on Twitter or USTREAM, together with the quality of coverage and crucial updates provided by the mass media this time around is incomparable to what we got during the Kobe earthquake. I am deeply impressed by Japan’s successful efforts and ability to put to practice lessons learnt from past tragedies.

http://twitter.com/izumi823/statuses/46387948681297920

Touch of art
I saw artists and painters trying to keep things upbeat by painting or drawing beautiful or encouraging drawings for the evacuees around them. I was touched at how everyone was doing their very best to help.

* BBCの報道

http://twitter.com/bozzo1985/status/46228470614855681

BBC Reports
The words of BBC’s reports are so moving they make me cry. They were praising us with words of admiration! “One of the worst earthquakes in recorded history has hit the world’s most well-prepared, well-trained nations. The strength of its government and its people are put to the test. While there have been casualties, in no other country could the government and the people have worked together in such an accurate and coordinated way in the face of such tragedy. The Japanese people have shown their cultural ability to remain calm in the face of adversity.”

http://twitter.com/s_hayatsuki/status/46386255767937024

A little story about Papa
We live in an area that was not directly hit. When my father came downstairs and heard the news saying that our area had begun allocating electricity to the hard-hit areas, he quietly led by example, turning off the power around the house and pulling the plugs out of their sockets. I was touched. He usually NEVER turns off the lights or the AC or the TV or anything!

http://twitter.com/HASUNA_Natsuko/status/46331839136276480

http://twitpic.com/48kn1u
Japanese people don’t shove
I’m looking at Yurakucho station from above. I see people standing in line, not pushing or shoving to get onto the Yamanote Line (probably the busiest line in central Tokyo), even at a time like this!

* パン屋

http://twitter.com/ayakishimoto/statuses/46403599743451136

The bakery lady
There was a small bread shop on the street I take to go to school. It has long been out of business. But last night, I saw the old lady of the shop giving people her handmade bread for free. It was a heart-warming sight. She, like everyone else, was doing what she could to help people in a time of need. Tokyo isn’t that bad afterall!

http://twitter.com/tksksks/statuses/46403815397801984

Japan is a wonderful nation!
Both the government and the people, everyone is helping one another today. There are truck drivers helping evacuees move. I even heard that the “yakuza” (gangsters, organized crime groups) are helping to direct traffic in the Tohoku region! There have been many recent developments that have made me lose my sense of pride in my country, but not anymore. Japan is an amazing place! I’m just simply touched. Go Japan!

* twitterすごい

http://twitter.com/bobiko009/statuses/46403721046933504

Twitter is amazing!
The information shared to us all by the twitter community has been amazingly consistent with each other and has been so helpful. Thank you Twitterers! I’m very moved. People recently talk about social networks replacing traditional social life and making people cold and unsociable in real life. But … I guess that’s not true at all.

http://twitter.com/sikkoku_otsuyu/status/46392832893796352

From a German friend
A German friend of mine was in Shibuya (downtown Tokyo shopping district) when the earthquake hit. He was panicking when a Japanese passerby saved him, taking him into a building. My friend was blown away at how calm and disciplined this Japanese man was. He went out of the building with firm, unfaltering steps, did everything he was trained to do and came back. My German friend was deeply impressed by the Japanese people’s actions during the earthquake, saying they looked like a trained army.

http://twitter.com/endless_6/status/46395420523503616

At the supermarket
I just came back safely from the supermarket! Man, I was so touched at how everyone there was mindful of others, buying only as much as they needed and leaving the rest for the people behind them.

http://twitter.com/Raaaaayuu/statuses/46392890313801728

Gotenba traffic
Japan is really something! Yesterday, not a single traffic light was functioning in Gotenba City. But drivers knew to take turns at intersections and give way to others when needed. Local people were using flags to direct traffic at intersections. I drove for 9 hours but never saw a single car trying to get in front of another. Every single driver on the road contributed to the traffic situation and as a result there was no confusion at all.

* 「みんな」

http://twitter.com/n_yum/statuses/46388003706380288

“All of us”
I spoke with an old taxi driver and some elderly staff at the train stations. All of them had been working non-stop and had not been able to go home for a long time. They were visibly very tired, but never once did they show any sign of impatience; they were gentle and very caring. They told me “… because all of us are in this together.” I was touched at what the notion of “all of us” meant to these elderly people. It is a value I will treasure and carry on to my generation.

http://twitter.com/dita_69/status/46309373458382849

A strong Japan
Suntory Beverages has set up free vending machines. Softbank Telephone services is offering free Wifi spots. Everyone in Japan is putting everything they can into helping one another. Japan is also now receiving aid from abroad. Compared to the Kobe earthquake, when Japan took too long to contemplate accepting foreign aid or dispatching the self-defense force to join the rescue effort, Japan has definitely grown into a far stronger nation. Be strong, everyone!

* 朝礼

http://twitter.com/kyoheimai/status/46374747755388928

Morning Ceremony
At the shopping center I work at, every morning we have a ritual (common in Japan) where we stand and recite, “No matter what the situation, I will never show anxiety before my customer; in all customer-facing situations I will treat my customers with respect and do everything I can to make them feel comfortable and at ease”. Today, these words were all actually kind of touching. Well, so the day begins! Here we go people, open shop!

http://twitter.com/frankyonn/status/46401442583552000

ＲＴ@inouetake Smile42.
Mr. Inoue
Mr. Inoue has been churning out drawings of smiling and laughing faces at an amazing pace! Things like this remind me again of what it truly means to give people a message of strength and courage.

* 学び

http://twitter.com/chaos_chaotic/statuses/46388646038876160

Lessons Learnt
What caught my attention on twitter is that a lot of the tweets were about the Kobe earthquake and how what we have learned from it has been put into practice this time around. I know it goes without saying, but I was once again reminded of how humans are indeed creatures that possess the amazing ability to think and learn from experience. It’s a great thought.

http://twitter.com/tsubakianna/statuses/46387133396688896

Message from a friend in Rome
My friend in Rome emailed me. He said that people in Rome are watching the news and sharing their amazement and their heartfelt respect at how, even at a time like this, the people of Japan are able to remain calm and systematically respond to the situation. People in Rome are thinking of us and are very concerned for us.

http://twitter.com/RUMI88LoL/statuses/46342599149240320

A strong voice
Yesterday, I was impressed and touched by the actions of my neighbor’s 13-year-old-boy. He was home alone when the earthquake hit. But instead of hiding, as soon as the earthquake quieted down, he jumped on his bicycle and road around the block repeatedly shouting at the top of his voice, “Is everyone alright? Is everyone okay?” At the time, there were only women and children and the elderly in the homes. I cannot describe how comforting it was just to hear a strong voice asking if I was okay. Thank you!

http://twitter.com/sorry_no_user/statuses/46332985133375488

The beauty of helping one another
I went out last night to help some friends who were volunteering as security personnel between Machida City and Sagami Ohno City. I saw total strangers, both young and old, helping each other along everywhere I turned and was heartened with an overwhelming feeling of encouragement. I was so touched I hid behind the toilets and cried.

http://twitter.com/hikaru_star/statuses/46332900928532480

I just have a bike
I’m so touched! My colleague at my part time job, wanting to help even just one extra person, wrote a sign saying “I just have a bike, but if you don’t mind hop on!”, rode out on his motorbike, picked up a stranded construction worker and took him all the way to Tokorozawa! Respect! I have never felt so strongly that I want to do something helpful for others.

http://twitter.com/pao313/statuses/46332792174411776

Sharing your ride
It was stupid of me to think I could catch a cab at Urawamien Station. I ended up walking 30 minutes and then finally was picked up by a stranger who offered to give me a lift. I’m touched by the warmth of human kindness. Thank you, thank you!

* 開放

http://twitter.com/robasuke23/statuses/46326711935172609

Rest here!
Last night, I decided, rather than stay at the office, I should try walking home. So I slowly made my way west on Koshu freeway on foot. It was around 9PM when I saw an office building that had a sign that said “Please use our office’s bathrooms! Please rest here!” The employees of the office were loudly shouting out the same to all the people trying to walk home. I was so touch I felt like crying. Well, I guess I was too tense yesterday to cry, but now the tension is wearing off and am very much in tears.

http://twitter.com/sugarun/statuses/46323030732967936

At the convenience store
While most of the convenience stores near the station were closed because of the quake, there was just one Seven Eleven that was open. The employees had lit lots of candles and put them on the stores shelves. The cash register was not working and they could not take inventory, so the employees worked in threes, one reading up the item description and price, another punching the numbers into a calculator, and the last one using a flashlight to help them work. The store managed to operate both “cash registers” efficiently this way. Impressed!

* 避難所

http://twitter.com/msakatan/statuses/46302864980705280

On the way to the emergency evacuation area
My oldest daughter was making her way to Yokohama’s emergency evacuation area. Total strangers were helping each other out and showing each other the way to the emergency evacuation area. She told me she was moved at how strangers, who can seem so cold at times, showed her kindness and care. I was reminded at the Japanese peoples’ inherent ability to immediately unite in the face of adversity. Today, I have discovered a newfound faith in my nation and my people.

http://twitter.com/akanensm/status/46214540161064960

A big, kind voice
I’ve been walking for many hours now. I’m touched at how everywhere I turn, there are shops open with people shouting “Please use our bathroom!” or “Please rest here!” There were also office buildings where people with access to information were voluntarily shouting out helpful tips, like “**** line is now operational!” Seeing things like this after walking for hours and hours made me feel like weeping with gratitude. Seriously, there is still hope for this country!

http://twitter.com/masa_kisshie/statuses/46323838316843008

On the platform
The Oedo Subway Line for Hikarigaoka is very congested. On the platform and at the gate there are just crowds and crowds of people waiting for the train. But in all the confusion, every last person is neatly lined up waiting his or her turn while managing to keep a passage of space open for staff and people going the other way. Everyone is listening to the instructions from the staff and everyone acts accordingly. And amazingly … there isn’t even a rope or anything in sight to keep people in queue or open space for staff to pass, they just do! I am so impressed at this almost unnatural orderliness! I have nothing but praise for these people!

http://twitter.com/tadakatz/status/46274214654787584

Station staff
I said to a Tokyometro station staff who was on all-night duty, “I’m sure it has been a tough night for you. Thank you.” He responded with a smile, “On a night like this, gladly!” I was touched.

http://twitter.com/sumonya/status/46479563412348928

Coffee
My husband finally got home very late last night after walking for 4 hours. He told me he felt like giving up at around Akabane, when an elderly man who was going around handing out free coffee saw him, gave him a steaming cup and said, “You must be tired and cold. Here, have some coffee!” My husband told me that it was because of this elderly man that he found the will and strength to continue walking. I’ve already heard this story from him five times tonight, so no doubt he was really, really touched! Thank you to my husband’s anonymous helper!

http://twitter.com/NOBCHIDORI/status/46477518169047040

Blood donations
Japan is strong! At Osaka I saw a LONG line of people waiting to give blood at the blood donation center. This is the first time I have seen such a queue of selfless people waiting patiently in line just to give. It was a moving sight! To everyone in the hard-hit areas, we your countrymen accept your suffering as our own and we share in your grief. Do not give up! Stay strong!

http://twitter.com/hisyakakukeima/status/46584079558250496

Saving electricity for the North
I went to my neighborhood supermarket and was initially surprised that their neon signs were off. They usually are open till 1AM. I then found out that they were open, but were saving electricity so that more power could be channeled to the hard-hit coastal areas. Wow!

http://twitter.com/raai15/status/46546475362160640

Not enough money!
At the store where I work, a huge group of young men suddenly came in to buy booze. One of them suddenly said, “Oops, I only have enough money to buy booze, I can’t donate! Forget the booze, maybe next time!” and instead put ALL his money into the disaster relief donation box. One by one, every single one of the army of youths threw all their money into the box after him. What a heart-warming sight that was!

http://twitter.com/7474529/status/46565903520907264

Goth youth
A goth youth with white hair and body piercings walked into my store and shoved several hundred dollars (several tens of thousands of yen) into the disaster relief fund donation box. As he walked out, I and people around me heard him saying to his buddies, “I mean, we can buy those games anytime!” At that, we all opened our wallets and put our money into the donation box. Really, you cannot judge people by their appearances.

http://twitter.com/kyugatimuti/statuses/46594200061493249

They looked absolutely delicious!
I too saw the guy handing out free rice balls and miso soup on the way back from Akihabara. I was on my bicycle so I told him, “I’m okay, please give it to other people!” On hindsight, I should have taken one … they looked absolutely delicious!!

http://twitter.com/moebamuse/status/46379810217406465

Another Disney episode
Amazing! My brother just managed to get home from Disneyland right now. He’s got bags and bags of free sweets. Furthermore, Disneyland paid for every customer’s travel fare back. All night long, the staff responded immediately and fully to every request he made. Disneyland is truly a world class brand!

http://twitter.com/ryoshun49/statuses/46605524434821120

Same boat!
Last night, Aobadai station was jammed with stranded people unable to get home. But there were private cars with drivers shouting “If you’re going in the direction of ****, please hop on!” I was able to hitch a ride on one of them. When I thanked the driver, he replied “No worries! We’re all on the same boat. We have to stick together!”

http://twitter.com/yamachin_x1/statuses/46609620210421760

Need to charge your phone?
At the emergency evacuation area, a young first-year intern at my company who had brought her phone’s charger got permission from the facility to use their power socket and went around shouting “Anyone need to charge their phone? Please use my charger!” Just a little thing, but I was touched.

Meanwhile, aftershocks are still occurring in various parts of Japan, as well as the occasional earthquakes once again.
And just when you think things couldn’t get worse, they did. It seems a volcano in SW Japan, part of the Mount Kirishima range, just erupted probably due to all the tension and tremors in the earth.

Latest from the BBC, will update on this post when I get more information. And I am currently hearing reports about fears of entire towns being swept away are confirmed. A very upsetting part of yet another upsetting day.

Meanwhile, the Shinmoedake volcano in southern Japan has resumed eruptions of ash and rocks after a couple of weeks of inactivity, Japan’s meteorological agency has said. It is unclear if the eruptions are linked to Friday’s earthquake.

Background info about the Shinmoedake volcano.

Shinmoedake (新燃岳) is a volcano in Kyūshū, Japan, and a part of the Kirishima cluster of volcanoes. It is believed to have formed between 7,300 and 25,000 years ago.[2] Past observed records include eruptions in 1716, 1717, 1771, 1822, 1959, 1991, 2008, and 2009. The latest eruptions began on January 19, 2011, and the alert level was raised to 3 on January 27.[1] As of February 2011, a lava dome was growing in the volcano’s crater.

Just saw this online and it was tremendously upsetting to read.

Its self-explanatory. A Chinese victim of the earthquake, stuck in Sendai, sent it out to her friend to let her know what’s its like over on her end and about the heart-breaking sights she has witnessed.

This is a mail from my friend
She asked me to post for her
She is in Sendai, Japan
Rescued early morning today
After being trapped for 8 hours
I hope you can finish reading
Hope you are a good person
Respect others
Even if you want to insult
Please don’t leave traces here
——————————

Aren’t we all comrades?
Just because you are in China
Just because you don’t have family or friends in Japan
You can say words like let Japan sink?
The Chinese people in Japan aren’t people?

What is hate
Who can tell me what hate is
When you’re standing on a roof surrounded by sea water
When in that water, is your home
When in that water, are your friends and family
Do you still know what hate is?

He kills you, so you must kill him
Then I think patriots with this kind of ideals
Can go to Japan for school or work
Then choose a rush hour
Take a knife, and kill whoever you see
I promise you can kill 100 people
I promise you can kill all types of people
I promise you can become the headline news
I promise you can fulfill your heroic dream

But you have to know
That in those 100 people

Maybe 10 were innocent children
Maybe 10 were house wives on their way home with groceries
Maybe 10 were workers working hard to provide for their families
Maybe 10 were elders
Maybe 10 were youngsters hanging out
Maybe 10 were part-timers delivering take-out
Maybe 10 were people waiting for a bus
Maybe 10 were passerbys
Maybe 10 were those who don’t know why you killed them
Maybe 10 were Chinese

Even if there really is someone you want to kill
I advice you
Choose carefully before you act

I don’t know how the Nan Jin massacre looked like
I hate those Japanese soldiers
I hate that they killed our people
But today
I felt like I saw a massacre
Standing on the roof
If you want to see
Look carefully
Sendai is you patriots’ heaven
Corpses are right there
There are some torn limbs
There are whole bodies
If you have good eyes
You can see the small hands of young children
If you focus
You can even see some corpses hugging together

Do you have any sympathy
Do you know that before Mother Nature
We humans are one family

My boyfriend works at a company by the coast
Till now we haven’t been able to contact each other
I know, we can’t see each other ever again
Who told you that only the Japanese died in this tragedy
Who told you that this tragedy is karma
Yes
It’s karma
The man kind’s karma is here

Right now I want to live
I want to live well
Right here in Japan
I want to live well
I’m afraid that if I died
Many people will blame Japan

There were over 80 people stuck in the building
In those eight hours
It’s true that they treated me like a Chinese
I have anemia so I felt like I couldn’t go on
A house wife with a baby beside me
Gave me some milk powder
The 20 year old girl sitting beside me helped me find water
Just like this
I’m still here
Perhaps it wasn’t the milk powder that saved
But their spirits saved me

Among the 80 people there were only two cellphones that worked
Everyone let the Chinese call home first
I was the second who got to call
Everyone lined up to call home
Till the end, some Japanese friends didn’t get through to their families
They understood there was no need
They gave up

After around 4 hours
Some girls were hugging and sobbing
Some were crying to themselves
Some were lying on the ground looking up at the sky
Some were still trying to call for help

I sat by the wall
Looked at the Japanese house wife beside me
She kept talking to her baby
Soothing the child to sleep and breast feeding
I miss mom
I want to go home

There were too many things I can’t forgot in those 8 hours
I’ve never been through so much pain in my life
Thanks to God
I was saved

What else do I want to say
I know I have so much more to tell everyone
But I’m so tired
Tired from crying
After the corpses are found
I might have to go identify them

Mom
Can I not go?
I don’t want to go
I’m so scared
I’ll see so many dead bodies
I don’t want to go anywhere

I hope this mail will get sent
Please help me publish
Maybe a lot of people will scold us
But
I hope you will know a bit more

I’m tired
Too scared to sleep
There are still small quakes
I have nowhere to hide
Mom
Are you watching?
I’m alive
Please don’t worry
Sleep for a while

——————————

Before Mother Nature
Do we still have racial differences?

Source

And news are still pouring in about massive shortages of food and water as well as the elderly getting hypothermia in the cold winter nights. The death toll is slated to be well over 10’000 and even the Japanese Prime Minister Kan admitted that this was the worst crisis to hit Japan since World War II. With the implementation of rolling power cuts across the country starting tomorrow in the world’s 3rd largest economy, its easy to see why.

There’s yet news of another nuclear problem happening at another nuclear plant over at Fukushima but hopefully its as over-exaggerated as the first one was. Last I heard, they were rapidly pumping sea-water into the reactors to cool it down.

It seems that the social fabric in Japan is still holding together in the midst of the awful 2011 Sendai Earthquake. In regions where official rescue/aid teams have not established a foothold, yakuza are setting up mobile aid tents to give out supplies and provide shelter for the disaster victims.

The cynics might say that they are just looking after their best interest – their ‘customer’ base and its all economically-driven. However, I prefer to see it as an affirmation of the ties in society that goes back decades if not centuries, where shady dealings are as much a part of legitimate business as the mom-and-pop shops so commonly seen in small towns and increasingly marginalized by larger chains in the big cities.

Also seen in a quote from JapanSubculture.com, “Even the yakuza are chipping in, with the Sumiyoshi-kai and Inagawa-kai opening their offices as shelters and sending supplies to the reactor site,” this seems that its not an isolated news report.

Quite a change from the usual no-nonsense, violent, crazed murderers stereotyped in the media most of the time.

EDIT: More news from a twitter feed

Japan is a wonderful nation!
Both the government and the people, everyone is helping one another today. There are truck drivers helping evacuees move. I even heard that the “yakuza” (gangsters, organized crime groups) are helping to direct traffic in the Tohoku region! There have been many recent developments that have made me lose my sense of pride in my country, but not anymore. Japan is an amazing place! I’m just simply touched. Go Japan!

Reposted from <a href="http://www.tsurupeta.info/content/open-letter-to-cnn-by-nogami-takeshi", target="_blank">tsurupeta.info who translated it from <a href="http://nogami.firstspear.com/?eid=1125442", target="_blank">Nogami Takeshi’s blog.

Nogami Takeshi is a Japanese mangaka known for works such as Koutetsu no shoujo-tachi (art, Shounen Ace), Serafuku to juusensha (Champion Red Ichigo) or various artworks for the Strike Witches franchise. He has written an open letter to CNN in reaction to the latest report about Rapelay, the Japanese hentai game.

Dear CNN reporter,

I am an author of manga [Japanese comic books]. I started out drawing hentai manga. I put out hentai books. Of course, I also draw manga that aren’t hentai. Nowadays, most of my work consists of non-hentai manga.

I have seen your news report that tries to stir up fear, prejudice and misunderstanding. I have no connection with the spiffy hentai game featured in your report, I am sorry to say; however as an author of Japanese hentai manga, I think I am well qualified to object to the views you present.

As this objection had to be put together promptly, precise data will be presented later, but it is a fact that in this 21st century, we Japanese enjoy one of the most safe and peaceful societies on Earth. Naturally, that is not to say that our society is without problems, but to be honest, I frankly do not think that you are the ones to tell us.

Men and women are equals in politics and in the law. Your society and ours are no different there. Moreover, the crime rate statistics for both general crime and sex crime in Japan are, with all due respect, several times lower than in the United States. Did you, for instance, fear for your safety while walking the streets of Akihabara, or Ikebukuro (holy ground of hentai books for women)? They’re probably many times safer than the streets of New York, let alone those of the suburban housing districts around. (And guns are illegal, too.) Furthermore, in our Akihabara and Ikebukuro, there is no persecution of men or women alike, or of sexual minorities like homosexuals. We all live together in peace, expressing ourselves freely.

It also goes without saying that human trafficking and violence against women are serious crimes in Japan too. As a Japanese citizen, I am deeply offended by the insulting implications of that so-called expert who associates Japanese people at large with heinous criminals.

Is hentai detrimental to the upbringing of children? Yes, it some circumstances it may well be the case. It certainly true, for instance, of that game you reported about. I am an average citizen with a younger sister and two nephews; I can relate to your concerns. And precisely as such, I beg to differ with your argument.

Those products are developed for rational adults. You surely don’t believe that a rational adult would be influenced by such a game into committing rape, do you? Of course, in Japan, both that game you reported about and the hentai manga I draw are only distributed and sold under strict age restrictions to adults.

That your children might obtain such materials on the Internet is a trouble for us as well. Those are pirated copies. We would be grateful if you could let families and schools issue proper warnings to children. And would it be too much to ask that appropriate age restrictions are put in place in stores in your country so that the rational adults can buy legitimate copies?

By the way, in the proud Japanese traditional popular art of ukiyo-e (woodblock prints from the Edo period), there were many works with sexual subjects, called shunga. You did like these too, didn’t you? Well, we are their successors. We make works of art. Let me say that again. It is just art. I assume that you are capable of distinguishing fiction from reality like we do. Are you not?

Obscenity? Ah well, on that point, I would rather quote from the book beside your bed.

But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

“No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

(John 8:1–11)

I am afraid I am Buddhist, not Christian, but I respect your Lord nonetheless. His word that you, me and all mankind are hentai is pregnant with meaning. Yet, there is a difference between “His” views (that you share) and mine. I do not think that people being hentai is a sin. There is nothing wrong with rational people being hentai.

I, at any rate, do not see anything wrong with that. Do you?

Sincerely,

Takeshi Nogami.

Personally, I feel this big hoo-ha was pretty much WOLS as the original report came up more than a year ago and CNN only made a video about it on the 31st of March 2010. Besides this, seeing that their Japanese correspondent is essentially a hyper-nationalistic Korean (What were they thinking!?!), the bad blood between the entire issue isn’t that surprising anymore. Nogami Takeshi’s letter was pretty well-written and summed all the main arguments – The consumers are adults and know what they are doing so just STFU and please bring your lame reporting somewhere else – pretty much in its entirety. I urge everyone who sees this to consider emailing this to CNN just to let them know how ridiculous their moral censure is. I don’t like rape hentai, be it in manga or in a VN or a game. However, what I hate more is someone trying to take the moral high ground and impose their moral values on another person. If you are depending on the Internet to be your kids’ moral guardians, well, let’s just say you are going to be in for a nasty surprise.

2009 has been a pretty good year for figure collectors especially in Singapore. Anime Fest Asia came and Danny Choo brought the Tokyo Figure Show out of Japan for the first time. The entire showcase of nendoroids as well as PVCs was stunning and I believe it was the first time a collection of such scale was displayed in Singapore for the public. The figure collection craze amongst the general public took off there and then and I can already see a thriving and rapidly growing community springing up in a few short months.

The top 5 figures for 2009 are of course purely based on my personal opinion. The only criteria is that it has to come out during the year 2009 so those which has been announced in 2009 but only released in 2010 will not be considered.

Ok, let’s start!

5. Native’s Kotone Banana Girl

This figure originated from a Tony Taka artwork which was then taken up by Native on a limited run. Fairly hard to get and only if you are willing to ship it from Japan. Very good details and a coquettish yet sensual face at the same time. Comes with the banana, desk and fully castoff-able clothes. Potentially a very very interesting photoshoot subject.

For more pictures of this figure, please take a look <a href="http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2009/02/19/tony-takas-kotone-ousaka-banana-ero-figure/", target="_blank">here.

4. Alter’s Yoko Littner

Definitely one of my favourite PVC purchase for 2009, the Alter’s version of Yoko Littner comes with a detailed, sculpted base with Yoko bearing pistols as well as a wind-swept jacket. A more mature themed Yoko but very very well-made nonetheless. Can’t find any obvious flaws and her resolute expression on her face coupled with the pose of her with her rifle make this a MUST-GET for any TTGL fans. For my short review, please click <a href="http://www.alternatesam.com/2009/08/09/yoko-littner/", target="_blank">here.

<a href="http://polyvinylcrush.com/?p=5787", target="_blank">Gallery of Yoko Littner.

3. Goodsmile’s Haruhi + Mikuru + Yuki Extravaganza Version Set

This is technically 3 figures but the entire collection is a set so I’m including it as a single figure. The set features a very dynamic trio with Haruhi on her electric guitar screaming passion, Yuki with her usual calmness on her guitar and the air-headed Mikuru with her tamborines. Besides the nicely made instruments, the details on them (note the creases on the jackets and the stocking linings on Haruhi) make this set very very hard to find after it was released. Prices started shooting up and I really regretted not pre-ordering it. Interestingly, many people commented that Mikuru looks like a potential leaner but it turned out to be a false alarm which was a hugh relief.

Gallery of <a href="http://www.goodsmile.info/product/en/2204/Haruhi+Suzumiya+Extravaganza+Ver.html", target="_blank">Haruhi, <a href="http://www.goodsmile.info/product/en/2292/Yuki+Nagato+Extravaganza+Ver.html", target="_blank">Yuki & <a href="http://www.goodsmile.info/product/en/2260/Mikuru+Asahina+Extravaganza+Ver.html", target="_blank">Mikuru.

2. GoodSmile’s Saber Lily ~Distant Avalon~

No surprises here. This was one that many Saber fans were waiting for the entire year and turned many non-Saber fans into one. The dynamic pose, the fierce expression, the subtle tonal shadings and the elegant base. What more can you ask for? Best Saber figure in years, and probably ever.

More of the Saber Lily ~Distant Avalon~ figure at the gallery over at AkibaHobby

1. GoodSmile’s BLACK ROCK SHOOTER

Hands up if anyone, ANYONE, finds this a surprise. This made it into year 2009 barely by the skin of the teeth, launching on the 23th of December and only available in stores around the 28th of December onwards due to the Christmas break.

With all the rave reviews going about the internet, I guess it would be extremely sycophantic and redundant to even review the entire figure for the 9000th time. Just look at the cannon, the scar on the belly, the flame eye and of course, the marvelous detailed base and marvel at how far PVC figures have progressed ever since they started being produced. Paired with a careful touch of the paintbrush, this figure will no doubt be a classic in the PVC world.

When it was first shown unpainted, people have already started remarking about how fantastic it would be and how detailed it was. And when the pre-order was open, everyone in the know just started rubbing their hands in anticipation. After months of delay, this was finally released as the year was winding down. And I bet not a single one of them was disappointed by the end result or the waiting time after holding this in their hands.

Awesome gallery of Black Rock Shooter over here at <a href="http://www.happysoda.com/1129/black-rock-shooter", target="_blank">Happysoda. I have been following his site for the longest time as he continues to amaze me with his stuff.

And there you go, my top 5 bishoujo figures for the year 2009! GoodSmile is certainly well on its way to world domination by the looks of things!

This song has really meaningful lyrics which gets me thinking. To be honest, I have heard this song some time back and didn’t really think much of it until the Hatsune Miku’s Giving Day Concert where she performed this song. It got me real sparked up to try to translate it my way.

Even now my heart is trembling

That day as we were on our way home together
Laughing while we held hands
I wanted this moment to continue forever
Your last words were “So far <for everything>, thank you”
as it continously echoes

I want to meet you, to meet the voice that has no longer resonate
as I call out your name
The sorrow, the pain
because the lonely night is frightening
I look up to the night sky
searching for you

[I'm] still wearing the ring you gave
Because this was the last bond for the two of us
In the far far away world you are in now
Are you wearing the ring that we exchanged?

Someday (someday) I will convey to you my thoughts and feelings
that has been lying present inside my heart for a long time
To make sure this reaches to wherever you are watching over me
I will sing this song

I want to meet you, to meet the voice that has no longer resonate
as I call out your name
The sorrow, the pain
because the lonely night is scary
I look up to the night sky

The great love I experienced over you
I would never forget
Even though my outlook might change inside

As far as I want to be able to say
in these words that I want to send you
I will love you forever.

I admit it, I can be considered what one will call an otaku if you consider my ‘unhealthy’ obsession with anime / PVC figures and the miscellaneous merchandise that you can so often find in any anime items shops such as files and particularly, pencil boards (shitajiki). However, I don’t exactly go around and announce such stuff to friends unless I know them well enough or until they have caught on enough to guess what I am up to in my spare time. I have also learnt enough not to go around using anime-related files in school.

The point is, being an otaku isn’t exactly the coolest of things and it can sometimes prove to be quite an awkward moment in a discussion. When I meet someone who share my interest, and I know is totally fine with mine, I will usually start to open up. However, most people will just give you a strange look if you start going on an extended otaku conversation with them. Worse, they remember you as “the strange otaku” and that will be the end of your social life so far. Ok, that was probably an exaggeration but you get the idea ^^ Anyway, until then, I will just keep a low profile with regards to my otaku interests and at best, be just a typical narutard/bleach or increasingly, a K-ON fan. Mind you, the first 2 categories are pretty hard for me as I don’t keep up with either Naruto or Bleach at all. Being a fan of the moe-blob show isn’t that hard….its engineered to let everyone like it. Why else 5 girls prancing around and doing funny stuff? Surely there must be a reason don’t you think so?

For those with a similar inclinations to remain under the radar, I have 10 tips for you. Not to be presumptuous but I guess we could use every tip we get.

The first is one of the easiest – Do NOT discuss anime or profess to knowing ‘popular’ (read cult hits/mega otaku obsession level) titles like Haruhi. When absolutely pressed, talk about shows like Gundam, Bleach and Naruto and just show a passing interest in them.

<target="_blank">

Do NOT attempt to have a lecture or ‘teaching’ session with other people. If you find that you are dominating the conversation and is already on a 1-minute monologue, stop immediately. Otakus generally feel like they have to attempt to level up other peoples’ otaku knowledge. We have a tendency to correct others or make known our point of view. DO NOT! This is a trap to lure you out of your otaku ninja-hood!

<target="_blank">

Do NOT talk about figures/PVCs, especially the gazillion collection that you have or that 1 moe bootylicious PVC girl winking at you from the corner of the shop. Knowledge about The Most Evil Company in the World (TMECW), otherwise known as GoodSmile Company, should be kept to a need-to-know basis. Its partially for their own good as well since no one can withstand the various poisons unleashed periodically on the unsuspecting public by TMECW.
<target="_blank">
Talking about bishoujo figures is obviously off-limits if you haven’t figured it out by now. Do not identify or even show recognition of popular collections, the nendoroids or any limited edition rare items. Talking about retail websites such as amiami (finally!), hobby-link japan or even hobbystock/otacute etc are obviously a big NO-NO. When absolutely needed, a discussion about gundam plamo & its difficulty is your best bet. Do not venture in Macross Plamo because it will just spiral out of control into a Ranka vs Sheryl debate.

<target="_blank">

Do NOT confess to reading any manga or even any scanlations. Its a dead giveaway for a ninja-otaku especially if you let slip you are reading some obscure or niche titles.

<target="_blank">

Do NOT in any case talk about cosplay, cosplayers’ raison d’être (fancy phrase which basically means why a cosplayer do what he/she does) or celebrity cosplayers (KIPPI !!). People don’t really want to know what you think of it, and knowing it inside out just make you sound like a creep who stalks those cosplayers. Just say its quirky, interesting and colorful and most people will leave it at that.

<target="_blank">

When someone says that some show is the BESTEST show of the season/year/decade/EVAR, and even if its the moe-blob show K-On or some show which you can obviously see is missing a plot, do NOT interject and argue that they are sacrilegious/rubbish/out-of-their-freaking-mind/obviously have not watched enough anime. Just let it go and suppress those urges to knock some sense into that person’s head. This rule applies to game(ero-games…), manga or anime movies as well.

<target="_blank">

On that note, do NOT even talk or venture into ero-ge/game territory. The less said about this, the better. Self-explanatory for anyone who wants to be a ninja-otaku.

<target="_blank">

Do NOT use words like orz/moe etc in your regular vocabulary. Besides making you sound like a terrible weaboo, its very disorientating for anyone who is trying to take you seriously when you are in ninja-otaku mode.

<target="_blank">

Most importantly since chances are that many people will trip up on this due to the surprise, do NOT in any case name popular anisong artists as your favourite band/musicians. A regular j-pop one is fine but will set some peoples’ otaku-radar on alert though. Anyone that starts to shift towards the niche like Nana Mizuki, Yukarin etc, no matter how awesome, is of course NOT appropriate for an answer if you are trying to be a ninja-otaku.
<target="_blank">
Personally, I will say Fire Bomber, High & Mighty Color and Orange Range. Most people who are not in the know will just wave them off as regular western bands. Those who are slightly in on the joke might find it slightly familiar on account of Orange Range though.

<target="_blank">

Which brings me to the last point. Its fun to know more people who you can just discuss/debate random stuff and commit every mistake the above 9 points have tried to prevent you from committing. This means you have to spread out some ‘feelers’ but nothing too obvious. Sometimes it feels much better to be yourself and have a nice chat about how moe-anime is killing the industry. Do NOT wall yourself away from the world

That’s all for now. Have fun and good luck!

This song got me really hooked onto it despite hearing it for the past 2 months already. Very nice music and really wanted to share it. The lyrics are very touching and pretty good in terms of making sense. I feel that most people can relate to it in their own way and this is what I feel can determine whether a song is good or not.

Its the ED of the Bakemonogatari Anime as well as one of the single from Supercell, the group which used to have Hatsune Miku as their lead vocalist and also the creators of Black Rock Shooter. They have alot of really good hits with Hatsune Miku and they released them all on Nico Nico Douga. Currently, for their latest project, their lead vocalist is Nagi (aka gazelle) who is another really talented singer from Nico Nico Douga. Which reminds me that I might do a short introductory post on some of Nico Nico Douga singers as well as Supercell’s past songs.

Meanwhile, enjoy the videos and the lyrics! I tried for the first time in translating a piece of lyrics so pardon me if there is an error somewhere. Please do correct me so I can improve!

This is the PV for their single. I find that it is purposely done in an amateur manner with a young inexperienced casts, probably to capture the spirit and rawness of youth as well as the tribulations of growing up.

the night sky seemed as if there were stars falling.
I wonder since when did I
start this adventure of chasing after you.
Please, do not be surprised on
hearing these feelings of mine

“That is Deneb, Altair, and Vega”,
you pointed at the Great Summer Triangle.
I remembered, while looking at the sky,
finally finding Vega
but wondered where is Altair.
This, well, is really loneliness.

The single cheerful you who was beside
there is nothing for me to possibly say.
Honestly, for a long time
I have understood you somewhere and
I have found that it will not get through.
“This’s not good eh, don’t cry”
I should have told you.

Acting brave, I was just a coward
pretending to be uninterested.

But

the pain piercing my chest grows.
Ah, I see. To get to like someone
is somewhat like this.

“What’s the matter?
try saying it”,

the voice of my heart wants to say.
<but> Its pleasant to be beside you
and the reality is harsh.

I didn’t say it,
I couldn’t say it,
<and I can> never turn back ever again.

On that summer day
the stars were glittering.
Yet now, I still remember
your laughing face,
your angry face.
I did loved them.

It’s strange, isn’t it?
Even though I know
something that you don’t;
my only secret.
Passing through the night,
the distant memory of you
pointing with your finger
in an innocent voice.

I tried to preserve the meaning of the japanese lyrics as far as I can word for word and only condensing/summarizing sentences when I can’t think of any alternative. Also, orihime-sama is the Japanese term for the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vega", target="_blank">Vega Star, hikoboshi is the name for the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hikoboshi", target="_blank">Altair Star and I have translated accordingly to the implied meaning rather than the literal meaning for them (It doesn’t make sense otherwise). The stars have a very interesting back-story which has many cultural links to it. Do check it out if you are at the wiki page.

Just to share with you a picture of 2 cosplay characters at the recently concluded Anime Fest Asia.

Basara was great, performing my favorite macross 7 song Try Again (!!!) and Remember 16 (classic!!) amongst other songs including the popular Totsugeki Love Heart. And May’n sang a few songs from her latest album not released yet and also Northern Cross, Lion & 9pm Don’t be Late. As for the Pure WIN, it was the duet between them and they chose not to revise old material like the Totsugeki Love Heart song which they sang together in January this year. They sang Diamond Crevasse where May’n sounded slightly under-strength due to Fukuyama’s powerful voice and then Dynamite Explosion, which was AWESOME due to the entire power and meaning of the song. I had a remarkable fanboy night which was made really memorable by that song as it was a great ending song for the Anisong concert. Adding to the fact that I just finished watching Macross 7 less than 2 weeks ago just make the entire experience really magical for me.

And as for the last WIN of the day, check this out -> Was dying to get them together to pose for a picture when I saw them. Pardon the phone cam please

One of the best cosplay I have seen the entire weekend (and there were some pretty good ones – Black Rock Shooter girl, I’m referring to you) and kudos to their originality. Both of them were the first time I seen these 2 characters in cosplay.

Not really a big fan of cosplay myself but the outfits on these 2 characters were really good and those Altos/Sheryl Nomes/Rankas over the weekends just pale in comparison to both of them. Really capped off my weekend beautifully after the conclusion of AFA ’09.

Good Smile has announce the pre-ordering of Index from To Aru Majutsu no Index. Quite a nice figure but a plain base and nothing fantastic in the design/sculpting. I guess the production issues with all their new fancy bases must be giving them a ton of headache.

A must-get for all Index’s fans but otherwise, I can safely assume you will give it a miss. Pre-orders will start 17th November, tomorrow. You can expect to get it at the usual places, including HobbyLink Japan and HobbySearch.
