Earthquake in Japan – Volcano in Southern Japan Erupted

And just when you think things couldn’t get worse, they did. It seems a volcano in SW Japan, part of the Mount Kirishima range, just erupted probably due to all the tension and tremors in the earth.

Latest from the BBC, will update on this post when I get more information. And I am currently hearing reports about fears of entire towns being swept away are confirmed. A very upsetting part of yet another upsetting day.

Meanwhile, the Shinmoedake volcano in southern Japan has resumed eruptions of ash and rocks after a couple of weeks of inactivity, Japan’s meteorological agency has said. It is unclear if the eruptions are linked to Friday’s earthquake.

Background info about the Shinmoedake volcano.

Shinmoedake (新燃岳) is a volcano in Kyūshū, Japan, and a part of the Kirishima cluster of volcanoes. It is believed to have formed between 7,300 and 25,000 years ago.[2] Past observed records include eruptions in 1716, 1717, 1771, 1822, 1959, 1991, 2008, and 2009. The latest eruptions began on January 19, 2011, and the alert level was raised to 3 on January 27.[1] As of February 2011, a lava dome was growing in the volcano’s crater.
